NELSON DIOCESAN BANNER

On 27th September, 1858, Queen Victoria signed the Letters Patent which established the Diocese of Nelson and the city. She declared 'And we do...ordain and constitute the Town of Nelson in the Province of Nelson to be a Bishop's See and the seat of the said Bishop and do ordain that the said town of Nelson shall be a city.'

Material coloursAs I sat in the Cathedral and pondered what I was to design,
I was moved by the beautiful stained glass that surrounded me
in the late afternoon sun casting wonderful coloured shadows
on the pillars and as I looked up to the communion table,
the cross in the sanctuary was a focal point.

As the cathedral is the centre of our Diocese,
it seemed appropriate to work using these focal points.

Sewing the bannerAs I designed the banner with these things in mind:

the bright litergical colours in the banner are for celebration
and reach out as rays into the world;
the gold in the left corner is the sun like the birth of the Diocese;
the brown at the bottom is the earth;
with the cross as the central part of our Christian faith.
